Bangladesh vs New Zealand, Third T20 Match: Bangla Tigers penalized due to rain, Black Caps series tied - Report

The weather ensured a second consecutive washout in Mount Maunganui, and New Zealand, not complaining, clinched a win over Bangladesh in the third T20I via the DLS method. With rain looming over Mount Maunganui, some argue that the hosts strategically forced Bangladesh to bat first, delivering a significant blow effectively.
Just days ago, rain washed out the second match of the three T20 internationals between cricket giants, but a decisive match wasn't played to declare a clear winner. However, on December 31, 2023 (IST), rain intervened again, disappointing those who had entered the Bay Oval. This time, there was a clear beneficiary.
Bangladesh enjoyed their recent expedition against New Zealand.
First, the Bangla Tigers secured their maiden victory in New Zealand by defeating the Black Caps in the Dead-Rubber One Day International. Following that, they triumphed in the first T20 match against the host team, which was neck and neck after their recent milestone victory. Another win in the shortest format awarded Bangladesh their first T20I series win in the country.

However, the downfall of Bangladesh's batting ultimately played a role in their loss in the third T20I, mirroring the rain's impact. Under the leadership of Captain Mushfiqur Rahim, New Zealand's bowling attack easily dismantled Bangladesh's top order, with only four batsmen reaching double figures, and the highest score, Nasum Ahmed Shanto's, being 17 runs. The rest of the players fell like dominoes, collapsing at 110 runs with four balls remaining in their innings.
Chasing a modest target, New Zealand NewZealand faced difficulties as four of their top-five batsmen succumbed to single-digit scores. Opener Finn Allen stayed firm, but when Shoriful Islam dismissed him, the specter of a shameful defeat loomed, as the opposition had not won any game in New Zealand just a month prior.

James Neeshan and Mitchell Santner Stabilized:
However, things turned around for the Black Caps as James Neesham and Mitchell Santner stabilized the sinking ship with consecutive strikes, bringing the team within 15 runs of the target when rain intervened. The match was abandoned, granting the host team a win via the DLS method.
With the series leveled, Santner and Shanto collectively raised the trophy, signaling the end of the cricketing year in New Zealand and Bangladesh.
